Waterloo Park will be getting a complete makeover, thanks to a $15 million grant from the Moody Foundation, the Austin American Statesman reports.
Improvements will include building an amphitheater and lawn that can handle 5,000 people. The Moody Foundation’s gift is the largest gift of philanthropy to Austin’s park system in the history of the city.
The Waller Creek Conservancy, which is in charge of the project, wants to bring Austinites from around the city and not just those who live and work downtown, to the revamped park.
The construction on Waterloo Park will start this year and is projected to be finished by 2019. The park is part of a bigger project that is overhauling Waller Creek from Lady Bird Lake to the UT Campus.
Waterloo Park encompasses 11 acres and has been mostly closed for the last few years while an intake building was constructed for the Waller Creek tunnel. The goal is to remove a lot of downtown from the floodplain. Once the tunnel is complete, the park renovation will begin,
In addition to the Moody Amphitheater, Waterloo Park’s new incarnation will have 1.5 miles of trails, gardens, and spaces to play.
The Amphitheater will be built by Thomas Phifer & Partners and will feature a steel and translucent structure. The amphitheater and most of the park’s attractions will be on the north half of the park, away from the intake building, which is located on the south side of Waterloo Park.
Waterloo Park is also close to UT’s Dell Medical School and the University Medical Center Brackenridge will most likely be redeveloped once the hospital closes and moves to a new location. The Red River Cultural District is also close to the park.
The system of parks along Waller Creek is called Waller Creek Park and includes approximately 37 acres of green space and is 1.5 miles long.
After Waterloo Park is complete, Palm Park is most likely to see a makeover as well. Once the Waller Creek Park is done in about 7 to 10 years, people could walk from UT to Lady Bird Lake without ever coming up to the road level.
